My husband and I went on a Banff adventure. My Mom watched our girls so we could get away and it was wonderful! It's been a long time since I didn't have anything I had to be doing. I forgot what that felt like.
The weather was pretty cold but we bundled up and got ourselves out and about. All the photos I took was during our short hike on the Fenland Trail. I kept wanting to stop and take pictures while Murray wanted to keep going because he was freezing. I did manage to get a few great images despite the frigid temperatures. Murray even snapped a photo of me.
With Valentine's Day coming up I thought it would be fitting to talk about love. My husband often teases me that I am in love with love and I'll admit, it's true. I am a hopeless romantic in every way.
Since I was a kid I've been attracted to anything that remotely has to do with love or romance, the sappier the better! Cheesy romance in any form makes me happy. I live for swoony, butterfly inducing, heart beating movies, songs, books, poetry, art, photography, and anything else that relates to love. Given my infatuation with love and romance I decided why not write a blog post about this? So here is my geeky Valentine's love list to you.
1. Favourite Romantic Song:
Kissing You by Des'ree. It's also my favourite song to play on the piano. I first heard this song in the movie Romeo and Juliet (which I also love!) and from then on it's been on my romantic song list. It's beautiful and swoon worthy. My kids groan when I put it on.
1.5 Other Favourite Romantic Song:
I can't pick just one romantic song so her is my second- Never Doubt I Love by Melanie Doan. My best friend introduced me to this song in university and we both agreed that it would be perfect for a wedding. When I got married this was the first song my husband and I danced too. I love it so much that I got the words "never doubt I love" tattooed on my arm.
2. Favourite Romantic Movie:
Anne of Green Gables. Oh Anne and Gilbert, be still my beating heart. When Gilbert softly calls Anne carrots and then touches her face I could just melt.
3. Favourite Romantic Book:
This was a tough choice for me. I read a lot of books and the majority of them have some sort of romantic element. I don't know if I can really choose a very favourite but Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell is pretty amazing. I highly recommend it!
The Kiss by Gustav Klimt. Just look at it. I don't need to say anything.
6. Romantic Food:
This one is so easy for me. Cookies and ice cream are the way to my heart. Salted dark chocolate comes in a close second. Bring me a sweet treat and I'm yours forever.
7. Romantic Place:
I've never actually been to Paris but it's the place I want to go to most in the world. I know it would be the most romantic city and that I would just love it. One day...
8. Love of my Life:
Murray, my handsome and incredible husband is my one true love. I can't imagine a life without him. He makes me smile, laugh, drives me crazy, supports me, and is without a doubt the chocolate to my chip.
So there it is, a short list of some of the things I am in love. How about you? What are your favourite romantic movies, music, places, art, and books? Who or what do you love? Inspire me with your romantic ideas.
In Home Lifestyle Newborn Photography is a newer form of photography for me. I have found that lifestyle newborn sessions are really special. I am able to capture those genuine connections and details of a family while they are in the comfort of their surroundings. Sometimes I feel like a fly on the wall just there to document all those amazing moments (both good and hard) after baby is born.
The advantage of an In Home Lifestyle Session is that I come to you. You don't have to worry about loading baby and all the baby gear necessary to come to my studio. Instead, I visit you at your home in an environment that you are familiar and comfortable in.
People are often worried about having a clean house for their session. This is NOT necessary! Taking care of a newborn while trying to take care of yourselves makes you busy enough. Having a clean house is not expected. I don't even have a newborn and my house is always a cluttered mess. Don't worry about cleaning. I can create beautiful images with your home exactly as it is.
Lifestyle sessions are easy for families because there isn't a lot of posing. I may direct a family to sit on the couch or to hold baby a certain way, but other than that, it's pretty simple. All you have do is interact with baby and one another while I take the photos. You don't even need to smile and look at me.
During an In Home Lifestyle Session I make sure everyone is included in the photos. Of course this means siblings and pets too! Baby is important but so are those big brothers, big sisters, and your fur babies.
All my Newborn Lifestyle sessions include images of your newborn all by themselves. I will bring some hand knit wraps, hats, and blankets that can be incorporated into these images. I love to knit so if there are any specific colours or something you want made, just let me know and I'll do my best to knit it for you.
As an added bonus, all my Newborn Lifestyle Sessions include a Life as Art Photo. This is a one of a kind image that Kara Jensen Photography exclusively offers. Families and I collaborate and come up with a custom painting that will be combined with a photo of their newborn baby. The ideas for the painting are endless. I've done foxes, owls, cupcakes, sailboats, sushi, trains, rocket ships, parachutes, balloons, flowers, trees, leaves, butterflies, and many other incredible paintings that families have asked me to paint. Of course, I always knit something that goes along with the painting as well. I love painting and being able to offer the one of a kind Life as Art Photos to my newborn families makes me really happy. Each Life as Art Photo is different and I know I am creating a unique work of art that families can cherish forever.
There is nothing as exhausting, exciting, frustrating, and joyous as bringing a new baby home. I would love to be a capture your beautiful family and create images that you can cherish forever.

I love little babies. There is something so incredible about these tiny humans. They seem so fragile but at the same time, they are unbelievably strong. There is nothing like holding a newborn in your arms and that baby smell! If someone could bottle it they would make a fortune!
When a newborn comes to my north Edmonton home studio I can already see each child's individual personality. Some babies are quiet, some like to wiggle, some sleep the entire time, some want to be bright eyed and awake, some like to be wrapped tight, and some like to be naked. No two babies are the same and every posed newborn sessions is different.
Posed newborn photography takes patience, practise, and training. I have taken a number of workshops and invested in training to safely pose newborns. Safety is CRITICAL when working with newborns. Hiring a professional and experienced newborn photographer is very important to ensure the safety of your newborn.
When posing newborns, I use more natural poses such as baby laying on his/her back, wrapping baby, baby on his/her tummy, or baby sleeping on his/her side. I am most comfortable doing these poses and know that I can execute them safely.
I am a crazy knitting lady and love to create hats, wraps, headbands, and little outfits for my newborn sessions. I can knit up special items for each newborn in colours and styles that people would like to see in their photos. If a family wants a bear bonnet, I can knit it. If a family likes pinks, I make sure I have something knit up in shades of pink. I can customize each session through knitting to make it individual to baby.
During all my posed newborn sessions I offer an exclusive image that no other photographer in Edmonton can create called a Life as Art Photo. This is where families and I collaborate and come up with a custom painting that will be combined with a photo of their newborn baby. My niece Megan had her Communion this winter. I've never been to a Communion before so it was quite an interesting experience for me. Megan told me all about what was going to happen at the service which was very helpful to me since I didn't know what to expect. I have learned that Communions are quite important and fancy events.
Megan loves to dress up and get her hair done so this was her day to shine! Her dress was custom ordered online and she wore her mom's wedding veil. She specifically asked to have hydrangea flowers for her Communion. I didn't even know what a hydrangea was until I was an adult! She got her hair professionally done and wore her brand new diamond earrings. She looked like a little princess and was practically vibrating with excitement.
Myla, Megan's younger sister, was also happy to get all fancified. She had her hair done to look like Evie, a character from her favourite movie Descendents, and wore a spiffy silver dress. Megan asked to get Myla a red rose and Myla was thrilled with the gift. She kept wanting me to take a million of photos of her with her special rose.
Despite the importance of the Communion and the elegant outfits and hair, both Megan and Myla were still regular, silly girls that like any kid, turned into ragamuffin munchkins by the end of the night. After going to the church, eating tasty treats, presents, and more pictures, Megan and Myla were rosy cheeked from running around with their cousins, their beautiful hair styles were falling out, and Megan's dress had a tear in it. It was a perfect day from start to finish.
Sometimes it hard to put myself first. Actually, it's really hard when I'm so busy trying to get a huge list of tasks done in between driving my kids a million places, making dinner, doing laundry, and still trying to save some energy for the end of the day so I can take care of me. Sound familiar?
When looking after everyone else, I can forget to focus on me. I have been working on loving and being kinder to myself but the process is surprisingly more difficult than I thought. I berate myself for the extra weight I've gained, how I don't work out enough, how I ate that extra cookie (or three!), and that I forgot to sign the permission slip that was due the day before. I judge the way I look, how I parent, what I was unable to do, and what I'm like as a person. I don't judge other people this way so I don't know why I struggle to show myself the same respect and compassion.
In 2018 I want to continue to love and embrace myself. I am strong, fierce, smart, and beautiful. My body has birthed three incredible children. I will be 40 years old this year and that's awesome. I am a good wife, a great mother, and an amazing person. I want to fully celebrate me!
I want to spread the love in 2018 and support other women in embracing themselves. Moms often tell me they don't want photos taken because of how they look. They will gladly get photos of their babies and children but not of themselves. This breaks my heart.
EVERY WOMAN DESERVES TO LOOK AND FEEL BEAUTIFUL IN A PHOTO.
I totally understand how hard it is to fully embrace yourself. It always feels like there is weight to lose, a haircut to get, fashionable clothes to be bought, or sleep to be caught up on but that's just not the truth. Every woman, myself included, is perfect exactly how they are!
Women are incredible.
We deserve to celebrate ourselves.
We deserve to love ourselves.
We deserve to celebrate our awesomeness inside and out.
We are all incredible, unique, and fabulous individuals to be fully embraced.
I would love to photograph your perfection. Take the time for yourself in 2018 and start by putting yourself first.
Are you ready to celebrate you?
